Coaching

David Byas, Yorkshire’s Championship winning captain, is Club Cricket Manager at Scarborough.

David Byas

On 25th August 2001 Yorkshire beat Glamorgan by an innings and 112 runs to become County Champions for the first time in 33 years.

The victory came at Scarborough which was doubly satisfying for David Byas, the Yorkshire captain, as he had played his cricket at Scarborough before joining Yorkshire.

Now David is Managing cricket at Scarborough with particular emphasis on coaching and player development, a job he is well qualified to do not only based on his extensive first class career but also his experience as Director of Cricket at Yorkshire.

Born in 1963 at Kilham near Driffield, David attended Scarborough College and on leaving school joined Scarborough Cricket Club in 1979.

He progressed quickly to the first XI and in 1984 he scored a Yorkshire League record of 1,394 runs in a season and the record stood for nineteen years until 2003 and even then was only exceeded by 27 runs.

His performances at Scarborough saw him become a Yorkshire player in 1985 and as a powerful left hand opening batsman and occasional right arm medium pace bowler became an important part of the Yorkshire side over the next ten years until he was appointed captain in 1996.

His strong leadership improved team motivation and gradually improved performances through to the title winning season in 2001.

After a brief and controversial season at Lancashire, David returned to Yorkshire as Director of Cricket in 2004.

Today he runs the David Byas Cricket Academy and is also an ECB appointed Umpire coach working with a number of first class umpires and umpires at county second team level.

David is also Director of Sport at Pocklington School with a huge emphasis on Pupil development and alongside that, the David Byas Academies have progressed into four local schools, Lisvane, Bramcote, Woodleigh and Terrington.

Piet Rinke (Zimbabwe) is an important part of Scarborough’s 1st XI.

Piet Rinke

Piet played eighteen One Day Internationals for Zimbabwe in 2006 and 2007. He is a medium pace bowler who can swing the ball both ways and on several occasions opened the batting for Zimbabwe although for Scarborough he is a reliable and aggressive middle order batsman.

Born on 5th November 1981 at Marondera, Zimbabwe and after leaving school in 2000 he played for Old Hararians Sports Club 1st XI through until 2007, he was appointed captain in 2006.

His representation at national level included Tours of the Caribbean, South Africa, Kenya and Bangladesh as well as taking part in The ICC Champions Trophy 2006 in India and an ICC Triangular Tournament in Trinidad.

In the summer of 2001 Piet had played for Duncombe Park Cricket Club at Helmsley which is where he first formed his liking for North Yorkshire. He came back to the UK in the summer of 2007 to play in the Norfolk Alliance Premier League but by 2008 he was back in North Yorkshire with Scarborough. He was recently married and lives in the Wolds.

Piet has a South African Board Level II coaching qualification and is involved in coaching at Scarborough through the ECB Chance to Shine scheme, providing coaching at one comprehensive and six primary schools in the area, in which he is very ably assisted by Barry Mitchell and William Gibson.

Outside his activities at Scarborough Cricket Club Piet is involved with Nixon Cricket at The Old Forge in Malton selling the whole range of cricket equipment and specialising in hand crafted cricket bats.
